News 2004

A delicious carvery lunch was enjoyed by a group of Scrabble players prior to the monthly Scrabble session at the Bacchus Hotel Sutton-on-Sea. A number of husbands and partners attended and the party numbered twenty five. The luncheon was suggested by one of the players and was arranged by Pat Horton (Committee member ) and was such a success it looks sure to become a regular event.

Scrabble sessions are held at the Bacchus Hotel every second Wednesday of the month - December excluded - between 2.00 and 4.00 p.m. This is not a competition but a friendly social event and players of all ability are welcome. Entry is £1.00 and all proceeds go to the Lifeboat fund.

In the year – April 2003 to April 2004 – we raised £4500; a sum we are reasonably proud of since we are a small, mainly retirement community, and we hope to improve on that figure this year.

In April 2004 we hosted a luncheon to celebrate 180 years of the R.N.L.I .The lunch consisted of a cold salad meal with hot new potatoes and a variety of desserts. After lunch coffee was served and everyone enjoyed a slice of ‘birthday’ cake made by our chairman to celebrate the Anniversary. Around seventy people attended and the event raised £470 for the Lifeboat fund.

Our monthly Scrabble sessions are held on the second Wednesday of each month at the Bacchus Hotel Sutton–on-Sea between 2.00 and 4.00 p.m. This is not a competition but a social event and is a lot of fun . Entry fee is £1.00 and all profits go to the fund.

Our Coffee mornings are held at the Enterprise Community Hall, Sutton-on-Sea on the last Thursday of the month between 10.00 and 11.30 a.m. Entry is 50p which includes the first cup of coffee, or tea, and biscuits. There are various stalls; plants, cakes, bric-a-bac, tombola , souvenir stall and a raffle is drawn.

Rosemary and Roland Cheffings and the blanketThe announcement of the winner of a specially created woolen blanket was the main attraction at the August coffee morning. Designed and donated by North Somercotes couple Rosemary and Roland Cheffings the blanket was made up of one hundred and forty four squares knitted by Roland and sewn together by Rosemary using the colours of the R.N.L.I. Rosemary says teaching Roland to knit was her way of ensuring he doesn't fall asleep in his armchair after lunch! Each of the squares of the blanket were 'sold' for fifty pence raising £72 for the Lifeboat fund and the prize was awarded to the person who had bought the 'lucky' square on a corresponding chart.

The winner was Mr Mick Latham of Sutton-on-Sea and our photograph shows Mick,at right, with Roland and Rosemary and, of course, the blanket. The coffee morning raised £170 with a further £80 taken on souvenirs sold.

On 2004 August 2nd we held a Race Night at the Seacroft Holiday site. The event was well attended and was a lot of fun. The event raised a further £124 for the Lifeboat fund.
