Sutton on Sea Cycle Routes – Promenade Cycling • Cycle2000 and the England Coast Path from Mablethorpe to Skegness

Sutton to Chapel Cycle Ride

Sutton on Sea’s promenade is an ideal cycle route for casual cyclists being a flat, wide path. Nothing beats cycling along the promenade beside the sea, especially if you brave it in winter when you will often have the cycleway to yourself. To the north it’s a short ride to Mablethorpe. To the south a somewhat longer ride out to Anderyb Creek, Chapel St Leonards and finally, Skegness.

Holiday makers and day trippers can rent a bicycle from Mablethorpe Cycle Hire which is located just next to the promenade beside Queens Park in Mablethorpe.

Sutton on Sea Promenade and the Cycle2000 Cycle Route

Joining the prom at Sutton on Sea you can turn left to ride to Mablethorpe, about 2.3 miles away, or right to head south past Sandilands to the end of the path at Huttoft Car Terrace about 2.6 miles away.

The promenade is a ‘multi-user’ route know as Cycle2000 so is a valid cycle path though sections can be busy with holiday makers in the summer and dog walkers all year round. There’s plenty of room for all with a bit of courtesy and common sense but this is a route for an enjoyable, leisurely ride rather than a workout.

Beware of Sand on the Promenade!

Please be aware that an easterly wind will blow sand up onto the promenade. As soon as the sand becomes around a quarter of an inch deep it’s like riding on ball bearings and any attempt to turn will likely see the front wheel slide out from under you sending all but the quickest riders down onto sand covered concrete which is as abrasive as it is hard!

Strong winds can, in just a few hours, blow enormous quantities on sand onto the path creating drifts several feet deep. The authorities do a good job at clearing the sand but be aware that, in winter especially, parts of the path may be impassible on a bicycle and very heavy going on foot as the fresh, un-compacted, sand is very soft.

Cycling The England Coast Path – Mablethorpe to Skegness

Sutton on Sea Promenade also forms part of the Mablethorpe to Skegness section of the England Coast Path which was opened in 2019. Further south, much of the route becomes unsuitable for cycling due to the narrow mud paths, which are often covered in soft sand and spiky branches. You can still cycle to Skegness though, following a similar route. See my Cycling from Mablethorpe to Skegness (England Coast Path) video on YouTube.
